This WEDA Academy workshop aims to demystify the development process and teach local economic development managers how to think like and even become their own developer. We aim to help communities with basic analysis to answer critical questions like, “did we give away too much,” or “would the development have gone forward without our participation,” and negotiate as an equal partner with potential developers. Ayres will walk you through basic market analyses, strategies for gaining control of the real estate, a do-it-yourself development financial analysis tool, how to identify financing gaps, and other strategies to achieve local, sustainable development.

Mike Scholl is a member of Ayres’ Development Services team, which works to help turn visions into realities and teams make an impact through sustainable, locally-supported projects that provide opportunities for safer, more accessible, and connected communities. Alongside a team of planners, landscape architects, economic development professionals, environmental scientists, and engineers, Mike has two decades of nationwide planning experience with consultants, community groups, and most recently as economic development manager for the City of Loveland, Colorado. Mike’s experience includes strategic planning, downtown redevelopment, brownfield remediation, grant writing, and comprehensive economic development. His vision and persistence have brought over $150 million in development projects from downtown mixed use to high tech industrial. Mike has a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan. He is also a Certified Economic Development Finance Professional from the National Development Council.
